The Pettibon System

A non-profit organization founded by Dr. Burl R. Pettibon in 1981, The Pettibon Institute strives to educate and advance a chiropractors' ability to deliver lasting spine and posture correction.

An overview of the Pettibon System

The Pettibon System of chiropractic posture correction is based on the pioneering research of Dr. Burl Pettibon and the key principles he developed regarding the influence of gravity, soft tissue and neurology on the spine. Dr. Pettibon contends that posture is controlled by the nervous system, particularly the cerebellum, which prompts the body to keep the skull upright (even if that means displacing the spine). He also asserts that the spine is a closed system of muscles, discs and ligaments, and therefore spinal correction must involve the entire spine, not merely one segment or vertebra. This differentiates the Pettibon chiropractic technique from traditional methods.

Pettibon chiropractors use a series of side-view X-rays of the neck to gauge its alignment relative to the model of the optimum spine that Dr. Pettibon established in the 1970s. A combination of drop-table adjustments, rehabilitative exercises and wearable corrective weights – the patented Pettibon Weighting System™ – is then used to move the patient towards optimum alignment.

Pettibon practitioners put these principles into practice in three phases:

Phase I: Acute Care

The focus of this 14-21 day phase is pain relief, restoration of cervical lordosis and front-to-back spine balancing. Patients receive functional, neurological and postural examinations and receive any needed spine mobilization. They also begin wearing their prescribed Pettibon System weights.

Phase II: Rehabilitation and Correction

This phase of care requires a minimum of three rehabilitation sessions per week. The goal of Phase II is for patients to achieve permanent correction. Depending on the patient’s condition, Phase II can range from 90 days to 24 months.

Phase III: Maintenance and Supportive Care

The purpose of Phase III is to maintain and enhance the patient’s spine and posture correction, muscle strength, and endurance. It involves weekly sessions in which the patient visits the clinic to work out on the Linked Exercise Trainer and receive an exam. If the exam indicates a need for any mobilization, the doctor will perform this.
